OVERVIEW

In this life we experience many struggles. Yet the Bible tells us (most notably in Romans 8:8) that God is working all things to the good of those who love him, that in fact he will make all things good in time. How can we accept both of these realities? Christine Hoover suggests the key is learning to see how God is working beautiful things even now, as well as how to wait for beauty’s fulfilment. She takes readers on a journey, relating personal stories about redemption she’s seen in her own life and in others, to show how beauty truly does come from the ashes in God’s good time.

Hoover does an excellent job of combining Scriptural ideas with personal stories that make those ideas seem relatable throughout this book. She also really runs with a metaphor used in the title, comparing God and the untainted Garden of Eden to spring and the struggles we experience to harsh weather. By showing how the harshest natural seasons have hints of beauty and the spring that will come, she drives home the idea that God is working his redemption in the world even now. A poetic and compelling look at one of the hardest questions people ask.
