Danny Lee, pastor and publisher, is our 2014 keynote address speaker, on “The Call to Serve and Point….The Ministry of the Church Librarian.” Lee is the Key Account Manager for Crossway Publishers.

He delighted us last year with his lighthearted wit and we can’t wait to hear from him again!

Picking & Choosing: Guidelines for Selecting the New, Weeding Out the Old, and Managing Donations — Mary Clapp, moderator

“Hmmm… Should I attend a workshop on tips and tricks of weeding, or should I attend one on creating a selection policy? I really need some ideas on what to do with all those donations that show up in my library though.” If this sounds like you, then grab a cup of coffee and plan to attend one of these two sessions. Participate in a hostess guided discussion, and take home handouts on all three topics.

Quilter’s Delight: Samples, Patterns, Projects, Stories, and More — Susie Wing & Ceil Carey

Retired school librarian Susie Wing will show quilts, talk about quilting, patterns, service projects, and more. She will even give out a simple quilting pattern. ECLA Co-President Ceil Carey will share a bibliography of quilting fiction and book-talk some of the titles.

Ceil is a retired public librarian and has been a book discussion leader for more than 11 years. She also serves on the ECLA board.

Opening the Word for Readers — Julie-Allyson Ieron

The breadth of writing on Bible topics has burgeoned in recent years. We can now access entire theological library collections using computers and even handheld smart phones. But how do we know which books to trust and how do we dig into them for Bible study? Julie-Allyson equips you to help patrons mine the 21st-century library for timely truth from God’s Living Word.

Julie-Allyson Ieron is an author, Bible teacher, and frequent conference speaker. Having been in Christian magazine and book publishing management for a decade, Julie manages her own writing and PR company. She holds a BA in management from Anderson University and an MA in journalism from Ball State University.

Whodunit: After the Friday evening meal, authors David and Diane Munson (former NCIS agent and former federal prosecutor) will present a mystery dinner for all attendees complete with clues and intrigue. Help solve the puzzle that these two masterminds have put together for us! Something new to ECLA that you won’t want to miss!

Courage Under Fire — David and Diane Munson

Join a former NCIS Special Agent and a Federal Prosecutor, for an inspiring time of sharing the secret back stories and true events behind their high-velocity thrillers. Men and women will enjoy reading how the Munson’s faith carried them through perilous times, including David’s being held captive by a foreign military. One of his former cases inspired a movie starring Johnny Depp. The Munsons will unravel the headlines involving Israel and the Middle East, and take you to where they see God at work.

OverDrive eBooks and Audiobooks for Church Libraries — Colleen Greene

Interested in exploring eBook and audiobook collections for your church library? Or at the very least helping your congregation find free Christian eBooks and audiobooks at their local public libraries? Colleen will demonstrate how OverDrive eBooks and audiobooks work, and discuss her investigations into and efforts to acquire an OverDrive digital library for her church library (including funding ideas!). She will also demo:

how to find out which of your local public libraries provide free OverDrive collections,
how to find Christian titles in those collections,
and where else to find free access to eBooks and audiobooks.

Those that bring their own laptops, tablets, or smartphones will be able to follow along with some hands-on learning. There will be time for a Q&A period.

Colleen Greene, MLIS, is a technology librarian, web developer, educator, and content strategist who regularly teaches and speaks on social media and emerging technology topics. She serves on the Rose Drive Friends Church Library Committee and Blog Team, is President of our Southern California chapter, and serves on the ECLA board.

Growing Spiritually Through Writing (and Reading!) — Caryn Rivadeneira

Though it may not appear on any official Spiritual Discipline lists, for the Christian writer, the craft of writing is a spiritual practice God uses to draw us to him as well as to grow, refine and shape us. In this session, author and frequent Moody radio guest Caryn Rivadeneira takes us through the ways that she, as a writer, has opened herself to the discipline, heard God’s voice, and experienced spiritual growth in the writing process. Caryn will also talk about how readers can enter into this practice as well.

Caryn is a writer, speaker and author of five books. She is a regular contributor to Christianity Today’s Her.meneutics, a columnist for ThinkChristian, and has written for OnFaith, Relevant, Christianity Today, among others. Keep These Classics in Your Church Library — Melody Green

Publishers release great new books each year. Everyone asks for the newest book by their favorite author or the next book in a series, but you will not have a well-rounded library without these Christian classics. Melody Green highlights some “old but gold” books worthy of the space on your library shelves, and worthy of promotion.

Melody has a Ph.D. in literature for children and adolescents and was a church library coordinator for 14 years.

Christian Fiction: Chris Jager

Chris Jager loves Christian fiction, and she is back this year to share the latest and greatest titles that Christian publishers have to offer.

Chris has been a reader for as long as she can remember. She has worked for Baker Book House, the bookstore arm of Baker Publishing Group, for more than 16 years where she does a job that is a perfect fit for her: fiction buyer. She blogs about fiction for the store at www.bbhfiction.blogspot.com. Some of her favorite people on the planet are librarians as they have always helped her find the perfect book to read.

Truth Is Stranger than Fiction: Nonfiction Choices for Your Library — Diane Fisher

As we develop our nonfiction collections, are we keeping a healthy balance of old classics and new? Are we inspiring our readers to tackle uncomfortable subjects? Are we inviting them to search the Scriptures anew? Join Bethel Presbyterian Church librarian and ECLA Board member Diane Fisher to investigate these and related questions.

Diane is librarian at Bethel Presbyterian Church, Wheaton, Illinois, and has worked in public, school, and academic libraries as well. She serves on the ECLA board.

Are you looking for nonfiction children’s books written from a Christian perspective for your church library? This workshop will provide an overview of several biographies, nature books, devotionals, and more that will entice children to read.

Kathy De Jong, who enjoys previewing and promoting children’s literature, is chair of the library committee at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Wheaton, Illinois.

The ABCs of Bookclubs — Rosalie de Rosset

In order to begin and sustain a literate, memorable book club, one must first develop a foundational philosophy of reading well. We will begin with that crucial issue and proceed to a discussion of how to choose the books a club will read. Examples of books used on Moody Radio’s Midday Connection on-air book club will be presented with reasons for the choices, along with commentary on why some books work better than others based on the composition of a particular club. Rosalie will also guide you on how to conduct discussions and create questions. Feedback and question time will be included.

Rosalie de Rosset, Ph.d., M.Div., is a Professor of Communications, who teaches literature to students at Moody Bible Institute. She has has been speaking to churches, adult Sunday school classes, book clubs, radio audiences, and conferences, for 32 years. Dr. Rosset is co-host of an on-air book club for Midday Connection from Moody Radio.

Tinna and Christy both have a masters degrees in library science, work in libraries, and serve on the ECLA board.
