Introduction

Title: Going Solo

Author: Robert Beeson

Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.

Publication Date: 2018

Format: Print book

Length: 206 pages

OVERVIEW

Beeson, having experienced a painful divorce, walks single Christian parents through his own narrative of forgiveness and healing. The author has endured every stage of divorce: from the separation from his spouse to his remarriage after years of recovery and theological inquiry. Throughout his telling of these benchmarks, he offers practical advice to readers who have endured the same hardships.

Although the author provides practical solutions with Scriptural passages for support, the book received a less-than-exceptional rating due to its scatterbrained nature. The sole semblance of order came through the telling of Beeson’s divorce narrative, but even this jumped around. Furthermore, he creates excellent metaphors and tells compelling anecdotes but bombards readers with too many at once. Finally, the book seems divided between the genres of memoir and a Christian version of self-help. If he had focused on one of those categories, it may have received another star. Nevertheless, single parents will still glean wisdom from Beeson’s experiences and will have more than one take-away from the story. Plus, he does not use this book as a mouthpiece of resentment against his ex-wife (quite the opposite), which proves him both a man of integrity and humility.

Christian Impact

Although God has intended for families to stay together, divorce has fractured our society, leaving several Christian families in a fallen state. Beeson provides practical and biblical advice for parents grieving over this new change in the family dynamic.
