OVERVIEW
Hamilton “Ham” Jones was married for about a year, then came home from a deployment to find his wife had disappeared. Years later she resurfaced with a child she claimed was his daughter, and then an accident happened which she almost certainly couldn’t have survived from. Now, Ham has indications his wife was actually working for the CIA the entire time, and she may be still alive. Tracking her down will require help from his old military buddies, who fortunately all work for his private search and rescue team. But will he be able to reconcile with a woman who seems to have lied to him time and time again?
Warren serves it up again in a story about a couple trying to survive a natural disaster while also settling their differences. In the first book, it was an avalanche. In the second book it was a hurricane. This time it’s an erupting volcano. Since Warren has picked characters who are involved in international espionage as well as search-and-rescue work, and she navigates the plot so her heroes have to go overseas this time around, the idea of them running into yet another natural disaster actually works. As usual, she creates plausible romantic tension, largely helped by the fact her novel follows a group of characters with difficult pasts. When one couple has largely resolved their problems, there’s still the possibility for things to resurface or at least two other couples who may go through a crisis. Thus, even though it’s obvious the heroes will have romantic problems in the beginning and those problems will get resolved at the end, the formula never becomes predictable that it becomes cliché.
Another fun romp in a thrilling series.
