OVERVIEW
The place is the Appalachian Mountains and the setting is 1877 during a siege of influenza and typhoid, diseases which leave many, many orphaned children. Worie Dressar’s mother becomes a surrogate parent for them, taking the best care of many of them that she can. But when her mother is no longer there, Worie’s heart breaks for these boys and girls yet how can she help them and what part will her two brothers play – one a drunk and the other mean and greedy? How can a seventeen year old girl take on the problems of the world to help these poor souls? Who will help her? Who can she trust? And who will care for her needs as well?
Using the dialect of the mountains, Sproles tells a story of a young woman with a big heart who is determined not to lose even one of these children. Along the way, she finds her place as a child, too, a child of God.
