OVERVIEW

Don Everts, a Lutheran pastor based in Springfield, MO, uses original research from the Barna Group to support his argument that every person has God-given gifts, skills, and abilities. That means each of us. And every person we meet–believer or not. He uses Scripture (including the story of Gideon) to show that this knowledge makes a difference in how we see ourselves and how we treat people we encounter every day. He explains: “Healthy self-esteem, a sense of purpose, genuine empathy, increased trust, growing power, recovered relevance, and fruitful engagement with our communities are just a few of the fruits that lie on the other side of that realization.”

Everts points out that we may have the most difficulty acknowledging God’s gifting in people who ruffle our feathers or are downright hurtful to us. An example he weaves in and out is his initially rocky relationship with his stepfather Buzz and how it transformed when he started seeing Buzz through the eyes of God’s gifting.
