This story starts in July 1869 in Chicago, Illinois, in a time when wives and women in general were not able to own property or have an opinion. A husband has his wife committed to an asylum simply because he disagreed with her opinions.

Upon discovering this, Beth Rutledge sets a scheme to free her mother from the asylum. They journey west to catch up with friends on a wagon train to escape their tyrant husband and father. They escape one thing to discover something else – love and friendship!
