Overview:

Life at one time or another can be a hard slog- we all make mistakes, both big & little. Julia Baird in “Bright Shining” talks about living graciously, so that we are able to forgive both others and ourselves. This book is a mixture of memoir, philosophy and scientific study. In it Baird describes situations where people experience unexpected acts of grace from another. They see the best that humanity has to offer, whether it be a donated pint of blood, a nurse who tells a joke to a bored and lonely patient or a victim who says “I forgive you” to a perpetrator during a restorative justice session. With her usual passion and style, the author also reflects on the abundance of grace in the natural world that we can access when our world becomes dark and overwhelming. As a Christian, we are well aware of our dear Lord’s grace. Baird moves this concept away from theology and into the mainstream, and in doing this she shows us how transformative it can be.
