The Prayer Coin: Daring to Pray with Honest Abandon
What if we looked at Jesus’s prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane with the image of a coin in
mind? Two sides, honest and abandon, with an edge that allows the single object to flip or turn or
be one or the other and yet a single coin all at once. This is the image Elisa Morgan looks at in
The Prayer Coin, and as she dissects how Jesus prayed “Take this cup, yet not my will,” she
teaches us how we can pray in the same way. Not either honestly or with abandon, but both at
the same time, flipping from one to the other as we grow in intimacy with God.
She writes with a tone that gives the impression of sharing a cup of coffee with her, telling
anecdotes from her own life as she learned how to pray in this way, and introducing complex
concepts with the simple stories of her family and friends.
