OVERVIEW

R.C. Sproul examines logical arguments that point away from the universe being the result of chance. He accomplishes this by explaining the inherently flawed idea that modern science currently holds—chance being a force of creation. He examines arguments for chance through a philosophical lens while also relating these views to scientific concepts, including quantum theory. Originally published in 1994, the recently released expanded edition includes a final chapter by theologian, Keith Mathison. This chapter examines arguments for the creation of the universe from nothing. Mathison shows how these arguments often work hard to redefine the meaning of nothing in order to validate their ideas.

Not a Chance does not function to demonstrate how the universe began. It instead wishes to show, through logic, how the universe could not have begun. Sproul shows that the mathematical concept of chance cannot exercise the power to create. While the concepts Sproul discusses are heavily philosophical, the reader does not necessarily need a background in philosophy to understand his ideas. An interest in philosophy and theology, however, is recommended.
