Overview:
This book is part of a series: Heroines of WW2 but is a stand alone story in itself. It is the story of Helen Smit who believed that God had called her to be a teacher. She loved children and cared for many as she taught not realizing how it would all take a desperate turn for survival when the Germans occupy Amsterdam. Jewish parents and their children are being deported. Helen realizes what is happening and all she can think of is escaping and taking the children with her as well. Many of the children in the school were Jewish and they were put on buses, unfortunately never to be seen again.
Meanwhile, Erik Misman’s is in love with Helen and that love is tested when he joins a plot to help move three Jewish children to a safe place in the countryside. They meet a family that is willing to raise the three children that he and Helen had managed to get out of the city. A German patrol stumbles upon the farm where they are hiding the children. When one of the soldiers shows interest in Helen, their plans for safety are in serious jeopardy. Are they going to be able to get out of the country or be killed in the meantime?
It captured my attention right from the beginning and I learned some history that I didn’t know. Helen had a heart of gold that went way beyond what I would have expected to some degree. This is a book that is well worth putting in the library.

5 out of 5.
