Minty Bradford 8 (or Araminta as she was named) realizes that as a direct descendent of the first Attisian settlers, she has a specific place and a part to play as a legislator of her planet, not to peacefully run the farm that her parents left her.

But she becomes caught up with two Earthens, a girl and her fugitive brother.  Of course, now she begins to question everything she knew as true, especially about Earthens. Are they really as uncivilized as she has been taught, as irresponsible? Minty is risking a lot to shelter these two.
