Overview:

Told in two time periods, The Lumber Baron’s Wife chronicles Hannah Wagner, a woman who has experienced a devastating loss and moves to Michigan in 1873 with her husband, hoping for a fresh start. Kate, the young and impetuous wife of her husband’s boss, does not seem to be a likely friend yet the two are drawn to each other in several different ways and Hannah comes to care for the younger woman. When Kate disappears, rumors abound as to what has happened to her.

In the present day, Ashley Gillett also finds herself moving to Michigan, this time because of her husband’s job. Although this couple cares for each other, they seem to differ on almost everything, including the type of home they want to live in. While restoring the historic home they eventually purchase, Ashley is captivated by the story of the doctor and his wife who had lived there and the disappearance of their family friend.

The search for the truth connects the struggles of Hannah, Ashley and Kate with the similarities that women share over all time.
