This book takes place in the early 1900’s and continues the true story of Mary Gerritse, a pioneer woman extraordinaire: mother, wife, mail deliverer, poet and philosopher. Her life is filled with highs and lows, heartaches and triumphs, much as each woman’s life is.

In this book she reluctantly allows her oldest daughter Belle to live with her parents but continues to regret that decision which makes her feel less as a mother. During this tale, both her mother and her father die, both when she is not with them nor can she attend their funerals. Her mother’s death, in particular is very hard for Mary, especially when she discovers secrets that her parents had kept from her all her life.

But through all this, her closest friends buoy her up as she does for them when they navigate their own happiness and disappointments. Courage and resilience are displayed by these pioneer women who do not let their circumstances dictate their fate.
