(Book Review) At Peace in the Storm

At Peace in the StormReviewed by: Nate Aeilts, writing student

Introduction

Title: At Peace in the Storm: Experiencing the Savior’s Presence When You Need Him Most

Author: Ken Gire

Publisher: Bethany House Publishers

Publication Date: February 2014

Format: Print Book

Length: 168 pages

OVERVIEW

Despite walking a road frequently traveled in Christian literature, Ken Gire evinces a warmth and sincere compassion. In each chapter he analyzes one source through which God communicates His peace to His children during storms of life. Gire’s words are less prescription toward specific actions than they are gentle, encouraging reminders of the truths we often overlook.

Though he uses cookie-cutter chapter titles—each of which take the formula of “Peace in/From/Through…”—the author effectively incorporates anecdotes while weaving together relevant scriptural texts to encourage the reader. The compartmentalized approach to discussing each potential venue of peace easily lends itself to group Bible studies. This book successfully softens the heart and opens the mind to accept God’s prevailing peace.

ASSESSMENT

Rating (1 to 5)

3 out of 5 stars

Suggested Audience

Adults

Christian Impact

It’s a straightforward, simple book that targets adult Christians in helping them pierce the shadows of stress and anxiety that easily blind believers.

Other Notes

Gire steers clear of most denominational issues. He occasionally mentions the healthful benefits related to moderate alcohol use—specifically a little wine—but in no way argues against the prudence of abstinence.
