     The Daniel Dilemma is a rather long book, but it is well worth the time it takes to read and weigh its content. Chris Hodges delves into the life of Daniel as a way of instructing the modern Christian in how to stand firm in the faith while maintaining a spirit of love. New insights into the life and history of Daniel help to illustrate Hodges’s lessons in a way that makes learning exciting. Hodges uses clear concise language to create an enjoyable yet informative message.

     This book is segmented into five parts. The first four sections focus on the main issue: self. Although Christians are prone to think the problem is with other people, Hodges counterpoints this misconception and teaches the reader how to be a light instead of a gavel. Only after the issue of self has been firmly dealt with does Hodges outline how to approach others with love when faced with moral disagreements. Hodges’s thoughtful insights and conversational tone put his lessons into action. He confronts the issues plaguing Christian evangelism—egotism, indifference, social status– with tact.

     The Daniel Dilemma covers many themes. Discovering identity, developing a worldview, and surrendering pride are all dealt with in gentle yet frank ways. But despite the wide array of topics, Hodges remains on topic. Every word counts in this book, and as Hodges goes on to discuss, so does every word in life.
