Review introduction:
Since its first edition was published in 1978, The New International Version (NIV) translation of the Bible has been one of the most widely-read editions of the Bible. Some years later in 1985, the NIV Study Bible came out, providing extra information and study tools. As time goes on and new historical information is uncovered, many of those tools need to be revised. This 2020 edition of the NIV Study Bible not only includes the most recent version of the NIV text, but also a variety of updated study features, including:
- Book introductions that answer basic questions (Who? What? When? Why? Where?)
- Maps, charts, models and study articles for getting depper into the context
- Reference in the center column for finding connected passages
- Over 21,000 study footnotes
- Index to Notes for finding deeper resources
- The NIV concordance for finding key words and names
Zondervan’s team has once again put together a quality study Bible for students of various kinds. The visual aids (including photos from various archeological digs) are well-organized to show readers interesting bits of historical context. The text itself is typed in a clear font (appropriately called “NIV Comfort Print typeface”) and the various footnotes fit alongside the main text without making things too crowded.
A wonderful study Bible for readers of many kinds.

Christian Impact
A great new study Bible which will help many people find new depth in their Bible readings.
Note: Some readers may find it helpful to compare this study Bible’s features to the earlier NIV Starting Place Study Bible (Zondervan, 2019) which combines several study methods and tools into one volume. To read ECLA’s review of that book, go to:
