OVERVIEW
In this book, NFL linebacker Sam Acho presents a clear message: You are loved and deserve to be seen. Each chapter reads like a devotional. He tells a story about his career in the NFL, his life as a black man, his marriage, or travels around the world. Through his vulnerability about his own struggles, readers walk away from each chapter with an encouraging message ranging from God loves you to use your gifts where you are, listen to God’s voice, and be a blessing to others. But ultimately, Acho wants readers to walk away with a sense that their life matters, and they can make an impact on the world just by being themselves. The world deserves to see your talents and unique gifts and personality. You are important and able to create a difference in the world because God made you unique.
ASSESSMENT
Rating:
4 out of 5
Suggested Audience
This book would be impactful for any Christian. The message is applicable across all ages, genders, and walks of life. Sports players and fans might especially get something from this book because Acho himself was a pro-athlete and talks about his experiences in the NFL. Even non-Christians or those who aren’t completely sold on Christianity would be able to walk away with the encouragement to be themselves in a world full of people who try to be anything but themselves.
Christian Impact
Rarely have I read a memoir type book like this that is written with such humility and vulnerability. Sam Acho is more than qualified to speak on this subject, but he writes each of his stories with the knowledge that God was working through him and he does nothing from his own power or fame. Instead, Acho tells stories that all readers can connect with even though they are about traveling the world and playing professional football. Overall, Acho presents the message that it is okay to be different because you are Christian in a really sophisticated manner that draws readers into his story in life.
