Overview:

First year teacher, Tilda Muirhead, is not the first orphan to find a sense of belonging at the Two Harts Ranch school in Northern California. When she enters her new classroom in September 1874, she’s following a trail blazed by Thayne and Lochlan Mackenzie, two mischievous teenage brothers who journey west. They were intrigued by the Legends of Gold they had read about in their grandfather’s journal.

Tilda’s adventure, like the Mackenzie brothers’, started on the Orphan Train. Now she feels that her real story is about to begin. She feels accepted as part of the boisterous, loving, treasure-hunting clan at Two Harts. She is a great teacher that learned a lot of history from her adopted father before he passed away. The admiration by rancher Josh Hart means a lot to her as he is a teacher himself.

Tilda receives a message from a brother? She doesn’t remember having a brother. Her childhood memories are cloudy since she was abandoned as a small child and sent to an orphanage. What should she do? Josh’s care for her helps make some great decisions but with a lot of chaos before everything is over.

Rating:

5 out of 5

Suggested audience:

Teens and above who enjoy reading about California around the time of the Gold Rush.

Christian impact:

Even though there is no overt Christianity mentioned, they pray and attend church. Behavior is above board and in its proper place.

I just wish I had read the first book of the series before reading this. The title is “Whispers of Fortune”. The third one will be coming out by the end of the year.
