Overview:
I love Kirkpatrick’s stories. She finds a seemingly obscure woman in history and tells her story, always one that can have major impact on the reader. Mary Edwards Gerritse is a very likable character, spunky and a little sassy for the time she lives in, the late 1800’s. This book begins in 1888 when Mary and her husband John are just setting out on the adventure of marriage. But as the story unfolds, young motherhood, financial failures and questions that Mary has about her beginnings all take their toll on this Oregon woman. The loss of one of her babies causes her to rethink this entire adventure concept and she takes on a very dangerous job, a treacherous postal route. How Mary does this and handles being a wife and mother as well are all part of the compelling tale our author tells in Across the crying sands.
