Overview:

In 1944, Dinah Kendall is offered a job at the Office of Strategic Services because of her innate ability to see patterns and to notice things others don’t. She has much to learn but adapts well, fascinated by the inner workings of this aspect of war work. In the process, she learns that her mother, Lilian, with whom Dinah has a strained relationship, was once a codebreaker during World War I.

The story is told from three perspectives: Lilian in 1917, Dinah in 1944, and Lilian in 1944. We find out Lilian’s background, her own difficult relationship with her mother, and the work she did in codebreaking. We see her side of how things are with Dinah. We learn how Dinah slowly begins to understand her mother better, and how the two of them end up working together to uncover a traitor working right in Dinah’s office.

Rating:

4.5 out of 5

Suggested audience:

Adult

Christian impact:

There is not a lot of overt conversation about spiritual things, but it is clear that the main characters have faith in God.
